In the western part of Tenerife, impressive 600m cliffs plunge into the blue Atlantic Ocean. It is no coincidence that they are called Los Gigantes, or ‘the giants’, because of the imposing basalt wall that seems to have been put up to protect the island, so much so that the Guanques, the ancient inhabitants of Tenerife, called these cliffs the ‘wall of hell’.
The gaze is immediately captured by the vertical walls of the cliffs, carved by the forces of nature over thousands of years, which create a breathtaking landscape, especially at sunset when the sky is tinged with a thousand shades. Los Gigantes can be admired from the mainland, or from the middle of the sea by taking a unique scenic cruise, with many excursions departing from Tenerife’s main marinas (we took you there by plane, in this very video).
Indeed, in addition to the natural beauty of the cliffs, Los Gigantes also offers a wide range of activities for visitors. The crystal-clear waters that surround the cliffs are ideal for exploring by kayak or boat, with the possibility of spotting the cetaceans that inhabit this area, which will leave young and old alike speechless.
If you want to go to the beach, don’t miss the opportunity to swim at the foot of Los Gigantes at playa Los Guíos, hidden in the shadow of the rock walls. Be careful, however, there are often big waves, so only go swimming if you are an experienced swimmer, or simply enjoy some sun in this enchanted place. We also invite you to take a stroll around the town and enjoy some relaxation, and perhaps eat some good fish in one of the local restaurants on the coast as the sun sets in front of the giants of Tenerife.
