Located on the north-western tip of the island of Tenerife, the Punta Teno lighthouse offers breathtaking landscapes, a fascinating history and a tranquil atmosphere that will surely capture the hearts of visitors. The lighthouse is located within a nature reserve (where you will find many cute little lizards waiting for you) and offers a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the rocky cliffs on which the waves break.
Besides its natural beauty, the Punta Teno lighthouse has an interesting history. Built in 1897, the lighthouse served as an essential guide for ships venturing into the surrounding waters. Today, it represents a piece of Tenerife’s historical heritage and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the island’s maritime culture.
The lighthouse cannot be visited per se, but we assure you that the surrounding landscape is truly incredible. Put on comfortable shoes and explore its surroundings by taking a relaxing walk along the paths of the nature reserve. If you want to cool off, you can join the locals bathing on the small beach next to the lighthouse, or jump into the cobalt blue waters from the platform hidden among the rocks where you can sunbathe (don’t worry, there is a ladder to climb up).
To get to the lighthouse, we recommend taking a bus from Buenavista del Norte, a wonderful, and very underrated village, so you don’t have to drive on the roads overhanging the sea. Check the bus timetables carefully and bring something to drink and eat, as there are no services in the area where the bus will drop you off. Plan ahead, as Punta Teno is far from many kinds of services, but it is perhaps this very isolation that makes the atmosphere magical!
