27 Aug El Sauzal
El Sauzal is located in the north of Tenerife, in the Acentejo region. Its delimitation is based on clear geographical elements such as the gorge of Cabrera to the west, which separates it from La Matanza de Acentejo, and that of Martiño to the east, which marks the border with Tacoronte, while to the south, supported by the Cordillera Dorsal, the demarcation line with the municipalities of El Rosario and Candelaria, culminating in a strip of about two hundred meters on the road to La Esperanza.
In our opinion, El Sauzal can be considered a witness, the open-air depository of the long and troubled history of the Canaries; inside places like the Los Angeles cliff, the Cueva de los Viejos and the Cabrera de Acentejo ravine, were the places where the natives had chosen to dwell habitually and that today represent the starting point from which to detect the traces of the ancestors islanders.
Alonso Bello, extraordinary ambassador sent by the King of Portugal, opens the door to the occupation of the territory by one of the families that will unequivocally mark the local history; conquered the island of Tenerife, the Adelantado (high royal dignitary) Alonso Fernández de Lugo established his family’s residence in El Sauzal, not without having previously distributed local lands among his captains.
The 16th century sees, in addition to Fernández de Lugo, grow rich landowners in the region such as Francisco Jiménez and Lope de Fuentes, reason why, this century, the agricultural activity becomes the driving force of the commercial activity of the north of Tenerife.
The Portuguese influence had particular importance in El Sauzal, devoting itself mainly to the cultivation of sugar cane, among the most significant we note Alonso Rodríguez and Pedro de Oporto while on written notification of the most important historical speaker of the 18th century José de Viera y Clavijo, El Sauzal was characterized by its vineyards and its waters and its splendid sea views.
Agriculture has historically been the engine of the economy of the area, at present the cultivation of the vine stands out in importance followed by the potato, fruit trees, cereals and flowers in medium height and the banana in the coastal areas.
In the Villa of El Sauzal the visitor can enjoy picturesque routes such as access to the city itself and the streets of Los Angeles, San Cristóbal and the Camino Real in La Orotava, from which one appreciates the scenic richness of the municipality and of the whole North of Tenerife and at the highest point the profile of the majestic Teide stands out.
