Güimar is one of the oldest settlements in Tenerife and is a very large municipality, covering about 1,029 square kilometers and borders with La Orotava, Arafo and Fasnia.
If you take the highway TF-1 we can easily notice the exit for Güimar, in fact it passes within the country thus dividing it into two parts: the mountainous one, where among other things produce an exceptional wine, and the one near the sea.
Few people know that tomatoes, pumpkins, fruit, flowers and plants are also produced here, where they have the primacy of provincial production.
We know with certainty that many of you know Güimar especially for its pyramids, we know their story together.
For a long time it was thought that these pyramids, characterized by five levels of rectangular shape, were the collection of stone piles shelved by the farmers while they were growing, also because this was a very common practice in the Canaries.
In 1991 the famous researcher Thor Heyerdahl analyzed them and came to the conclusion that it could not be a random mass of stones, also because the marks on the ground and on the stones were indicating a process, the ground, before laying, had been leveled.
On the 21st of June, during the summer solstice, it is possible to see a double sunset from the highest pyramid, the sun goes down behind the peak of another mountain, it overpasses it appearing again, and then disappears completely behind another mountain . On December 21st, winter solstice, on the steps of every pyramid on the Western side, it is possible to go up and see the sun that is born .. do not you find it astonishing?
It has never gone back to the age of the pyramids, even if the remains of the Guanches, the indigenous population of the Canaries, have been found.
In 1998, the 65,000 m² of the Güímar pyramid area was opened to the public as an ethnological park.
Inside you can visit the Museum, the botanical park, the poisonous garden, some rooms like the expeditions and the exhibition “Colonizing Polinesia: Rapa Nui: extreme survival”.
We recommend a visit, it really deserves.
