Garachico is a picturesque historical village located on the northern coast of Tenerife that you should definitely visit during your exploration of the island, as we did in this in-depth post. Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, this charming place will transport you back in time, while its cobbled streets and beautiful natural pools will tell you about its rich history that still envelops Garachico in a magical atmosphere. Let’s discover together some historical hints and tips
A brief outline of Garachico’s past
Garachico has a fascinating history dating back to the 15th century, when it became one of the most important commercial ports on the Atlantic, so much so that it was established as the capital of the island before the present-day Santa Cruz. However, in 1706, a devastating volcanic eruption struck the village, burying much of the port and surrounding structures under a blanket of lava. The eruption marked the height of Garachico’s mercantile splendour, but ironically generated what is now one of the town’s main attractions, its beautiful natural pools.
The Natural Wonders of Garachico
In addition to its historical heritage, Garachico also offers splendid natural attractions. One place not to be missed is the El Caletón Natural Pool, a series of natural pools carved out of volcanic rock, created after an eruption in 1706, where you can cool off in the crystal-clear waters of the ocean. The unique rock formations and serene environment make this an ideal place to spend a relaxing day in contact with nature, but beware: depending on the weather, the water in the pools may be a little choppy.
Strolling through the Stone Streets
One of Garachico’s main attractions is its charming old town, with its narrow stone streets and brightly coloured traditional houses. Strolling through the village streets is like stepping back in time, with craft workshops, cosy cafés and quaint boutiques. Don’t miss La Plaza de la Libertad, Garachico’s central square, where you can relax and enjoy the authentic Canarian way of life, and the Castillo de San Miguel, a small castle on the coast that was once erected to defend the village.
If you like walking by the ocean, instead, walk along the natural pools and continue along the coast to stretch your legs a bit. We recommend taking a break at the quaint patisserie bar Le Patissier, which offers a wide selection of pastries and a very atmospheric patio.
How to get to Garachico
To get to Garachico, you can take a bus from other towns on the island, such as Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz, but we recommend hiring a car so you have a chance to see the surroundings of beautiful Garachico.
If you are planning a visit to Tenerife, be sure to include this charming historical village in your list of stops. Garachico will enchant you with its authentic charm and relaxed atmosphere, providing an unforgettable experience during your trip to the Canary Islands.
