Masca is a small mountain village with no more than 100 inhabitants, located in an incredibly panoramic position perched on Mount Teno, about 800 meters above sea level.
In the past Masca was an important agricultural center, but the migration of young people from the countryside to the coasts and then to new jobs in tourism services, then emptied the agricultural sector.
Today it lives, in turn, of local hiking tourism that boasts annual attendance that surpasses one million tourists. All this meant that, in the meantime, restaurants and bars (one of these in a “shocking” position) reopened, bringing back the work that had taken away the young people.
If you choose to spend your holidays in Tenerife you should definitely visit Masca. The road full of hairpin bends that you have to travel to reach it is rewarded by a breathtaking view.
Masca is also the ideal starting point for one of the most famous excursions of the island: Barranco de Masca, the gorge that descends to reach the sea.
More experienced hikers can also return by following the same route, but it is strongly recommended to book a guided excursion to be picked up by a boat. Another excursion not to be missed ABSOLUTELY.
Once considered a haven for pirates, the small bay located on the coast is three hours walking distance from the village through a breathtaking scenery.
Once you reach the bay you will have to go back (and the return journey will take much longer and a well-trained body) or you can take a boat that will take you from the coast to the nearby village of Los Gigantes.
