Taganana is located in the northeast of the island. In fact, it is one of the first settlements founded by the Castilian conquerors.
Immediately after the Playa de Las Teresitas we climb towards Anaga and slowly begin to immerse ourselves in a landscape so green that we think of Switzerland, and the more we advance the more we ascend, the more the air becomes rarefied and fine while at the side of the road majestic pines take the place of the classical volcanic flora of the island.
And so until the junction for Taganana where the show literally takes your breath away.
Go to the right and drive along the coast towards Benijo, a narrow road but an amazing view. You will not regret it, it seems to have been catapulted on the Irish coast, parked (where it is possible) get down and breathe deeply.
If you want to go for refreshment in one of the many restaurants perched on the coast (El fronton maybe) be careful … head. Colorful “birds” whirl in the air.
The ethnographic value of Taganana is evident in the cellars dug into the rock or in the famous district of Portugal, a traditional patrimonial jewel.
It is recommended to access this village from the north, the forest of Las Mercedes, one of the oldest in Europe and through the winding road that goes down between the ravines. The center of the village is the square of Our Lady of Las Nieves, a quiet area where the local inhabitants meet in the shade of Indian lauri.
History
The story goes that in the middle of the last century, some of Bilbao’s pilgrims threw a bottle in the sea with the print of this Virgin during the crossing by ship to Santiago de Compostela.
The bottle arrived eight months later on the shores of Almáciga, whose residents responded to the message. They had a gift of an image of the Virgin of Begoña, which they adopted as patron saint of the place. From Almáciga it is possible to take the path that leads to other small inhabited areas, which we recommend to visit.
Benijo is home to about twenty inhabitants and we have news of its existence since 1536, when here they began to build houses, huts, cellars and even a mill.
From 1630 there is news of a hermitage dedicated to Santiago Apostolo, who collapsed a century later and nobody rebuilt it. Now there are various restaurants with typical cuisine, wonderful places to stop along the way to recover your strength.
