The majestic and splendid Teide, we all know it by this name, but in the past the aborigines had called it Echeid or Echeyde.
According to legend, it was said that the king of evil, the devil, lived inside the volcano and that he seized the God of sun and light so the Guanches asked their supreme God, Achaman, to help them free the God by also enclosing the devil.
It is rumored that the “blockage” that Achaman put is the last cone of the volcano, white that crowns the Teide.
With an altitude of 3718 m above sea level and 7,500 meters above the ocean floor, it is the highest peak in the country, that of any land emerging from the Atlantic Ocean, and the third largest volcano on Earth from the its base at the ocean bed, after the Mauna Kea and the Mauna Loa, both of which are located in Hawaii.
Due to its imposing altitude, during the era of European expansion, the Teide was also used as a “lighthouse” for navigation in the Atlantic Ocean by Spanish, British and Portuguese sailors.
Declared a National Park in 1952, it contains 139 species of flora, a third of which is endemic to the Canary Islands, including the violet of the Teide. This great plant, fauna, geological and landscape richness earned him that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2007.
His last eruption was November 18, 1909.
Anyone who came for a holiday in Tenerife, have to do an excursion to the Teide because its park, created in 1954, is about 19,000 hectares which make it the largest and oldest park in the Canary Islands.
